A winning strategy must boost business value; implementation must be baked in so actual results match or exceed forecasted results.

There is a lot of confusion and misunderstanding about what strategy is.

A strategy is not a business plan, strategic budget, high-level operational plan or a list of financial objectives and targets combined with a mission statement.

A strategy is a set of integrated choices to create a value proposition that delivers sustainable and superior customer value relative to the competition. 

A Strategy must make five interrelated choices:

1. What is the Mission?
2. How to Create the Value? (Core Capabilities System)
3. How to Deliver the Value? (Value Proposition)
4. How to Capture the Value? (Target Customer)
5. What measurement systems to support these choices?

For a strategy to increase business value, it must positively impact some combination of a willingness to pay, costs, reinvestment and risk. The strategy must create a durable competitive advantage, which is observable as a return on invested capital that is sustainably above the cost of capital. 

A winning strategy has five essential attributes: 

1. A unique value proposition.
2. A tailored value chain.
3. Trade-offs incorporated
4. A core capabilities system that supports, reinforces and magnifies each other. 
5. Continuity to hone the activity system, comprising the core and ‘me too’ capabilities.
